Does LipSense Gloss Help Your Color Last Longer?

Yes. Using the proper gloss also helps protect your LipSense color and can help you get the longest wear from it.

Remember: LipSense is a system.

You have the long-lasting color underneath and the specially formulated moisturizing gloss over it.

Putting another lip product on top may interfere with that system and cause your LipSense color to break down faster.

If you’ve invested in LipSense because you want lipstick that lasts for hours, it doesn’t make much sense to put something over it that may shorten its wear.

How Much LipSense Gloss Should You Apply?

This is the easy part.

There really isn’t a complicated technique.

Once I’ve applied my three layers of LipSense and allowed them to dry, I pull out my gloss wand and apply it.

I jokingly tell customers I could apply my LipSense gloss in the dark.

You don’t have to carefully stay inside the lines or worry about moving your lipstick around. The LipSense color has already bonded, so the gloss isn’t going to smear the color all over your face.

Use a small swipe if that’s all you want, or apply more if you love that juicy, glossy look.

The important thing is making sure your lips are getting the moisture they need.

Which LipSense Moisturizing Gloss Should You Use?

Glossy Gloss is the classic—and the bestseller for a reason.

It’s clear, so it doesn’t change the color of the LipSense you’re wearing underneath. If you’ve chosen the perfect LipSense shade, Glossy Gloss lets that color remain the star.

If you’ve ever searched “Does LipSense really stay on all day?”, “How long does LipSense last?”, or “Is LipSense worth it?”, you’re probably looking for something more useful than another sales pitch.

You want to know what actually happens when you put it on in the morning, eat lunch, drink coffee, talk all day—and look in the mirror hours later.

I’ve been using LipSense since 2000, and I’ve been helping other women use it for more than two decades. So here’s my honest answer:

Yes, LipSense can last all day—but “all day” doesn’t mean exactly the same thing for every person.

For me, a realistic expectation is about 6–8 hours before I may want to reapply, while some people get considerably longer wear. The company currently states that LipSense can last anywhere from 4 to 18 hours, depending on the individual and application. 

And that’s actually one of the most important things I tell new LipSense users: don’t buy it expecting somebody else’s wear time to automatically be your wear time.

My LipSense Story Started in 2000

My introduction to LipSense wasn’t at a department store or beauty counter.

It was my sister.

She lived on a farm, and she showed me this unusual liquid lip color. I remember thinking, I can’t believe farm women are actually using this lipstick!

What caught my attention was simple: I wanted lipstick that worked without having to constantly reapply it.

Then I had my own “proof.”

I went to have my teeth cleaned, and when I finished, the women in the dental office were amazed that my LipSense hadn’t come off during my dental cleaning.

They wanted to know what I was wearing.

That experience helped launch me into the LipSense business. I borrowed my sister’s tester kit, took it to the dental office, and ended up selling LipSense to 12 women.

That was the beginning.

And now, more than 25 years later, I still have customers who started with me back in 2000.

That’s one of the strongest testimonials I can give you.

So, How Long Does LipSense Actually Last?

Here’s where I think honesty matters.

You’ll see LipSense described as long-lasting, transfer-proof, smudge-proof, waterproof, and capable of lasting up to 18 hours. Those claims are part of the product’s published information. 

But I don’t normally tell a new customer, “You’re going to get 18 hours.”

That’s rare in my experience.

For most people I’ve worked with, around six hours is a much more realistic expectation, although individual results vary.

For me personally, LipSense generally lasts about 6–8 hours before I feel like I need to refresh it.

My mom was different. For her, it seemed to last all day, every day.

That’s why I don’t promise a specific number of hours.

I tell people:

You have to try it yourself to find out how long it lasts on you.

And that’s not a cop-out. It’s genuinely what I’ve observed after years of working with different women.

What Makes LipSense Different From Regular Lipstick?

One of the biggest mistakes someone can make is treating LipSense like traditional lipstick.

It’s not.

LipSense is a liquid lip color that uses a layering application rather than the back-and-forth swiping most people are accustomed to with a conventional lipstick. The recommended application involves three layers followed by LipSense moisturizing gloss. 

Here’s how I teach my customers to apply it.

1. Start with clean, dry lips

You don’t want a layer of ordinary lip balm underneath the color.

2. Apply the first layer in one continuous motion

Start at one corner and move across the lip.

Don’t rub it back and forth.

That’s one of the most important differences between LipSense and conventional lipstick.

3. Let it dry

Give it about five seconds.

4. Apply the second layer

Again, use a continuous stroke rather than rubbing back and forth.

5. Apply the third layer

Let that layer set as well.

6. Finish with LipSense moisturizing gloss

The gloss is an important part of the system. It provides moisture and helps finish the application. The manufacturer’s current instructions also recommend reapplying the moisturizing gloss throughout the day as needed. 

Why Does Application Technique Matter So Much?

This is probably the biggest piece of advice I can give someone considering LipSense.

If nobody teaches you how to use it, you may hate it.

I’ve seen this happen.

Someone buys the product, applies it like regular lipstick, rubs the applicator back and forth, doesn’t use the correct number of layers, or doesn’t understand the role of the gloss—and then concludes that LipSense doesn’t work.

That’s not necessarily a problem with the product.

It can be a technique problem.

Even LipSense’s published instructions emphasize the continuous application technique, three layers, drying between layers, and finishing with moisturizing gloss. 

That’s why I tell new customers to wear it for a couple of weeks.

You need a little practice.

Once you understand how the product behaves, the application becomes much easier.

Does LipSense Come Off When You Eat?

This is probably the question I hear most.

And my answer may surprise you.

A normal meal doesn’t necessarily destroy your LipSense.

I’ve eaten burgers while wearing LipSense without having the color come off.

But there is one thing I’ve noticed can make a significant difference:

Oil.

For example, I’ve personally noticed that something like an oil-and-vinegar salad dressing can cause the color to wear away while you’re eating.

That’s a much more useful thing to know than simply saying, “LipSense doesn’t come off when you eat.”

Because the real world isn’t a laboratory.

You eat different foods. You drink different beverages. You touch your lips. You may lick your lips. And everyone’s lips are different.

Even other long-wear lipstick reviews have observed that oily foods tend to reduce wear time. 

So my advice isn’t to be afraid of eating.

Eat your lunch.

Just understand that an oily meal can affect how long your color lasts.

“Case Study”: My Mom vs. Me

Here’s perhaps the best demonstration of why I don’t promise a specific wear time.

My mom could wear LipSense all day. A full 18 hours of wear. Every single day.

For me, 6–8 hours is more typical.

Same product.

Different person.

That’s why you’ll hear different LipSense reviews from different women.

One person might say:

“It lasted all day!”

Another might say:

“I needed a touch-up after lunch.”

And both can be telling the truth.

The product information itself acknowledges a broad potential wear range, and individual results can vary. 

Does LipSense Really Stay On All Day? My Verdict

Yes—but let’s define “all day.”

If by “all day” you mean:

“Can I put it on in the morning and expect it to last dramatically longer than ordinary lipstick?”

My answer is absolutely yes.

If you mean:

“Will every woman get 18 hours of flawless, freshly applied color regardless of what she eats or how she applies it?”

No. I would never promise that.

My personal experience is closer to 6–8 hours, while some of my customers get significantly longer.

And after more than 25 years, that’s what I consider an honest answer.

The Biggest LipSense Mistake I See

It’s not choosing the wrong color.

It’s not learning how to use the product properly.

LipSense is different enough from conventional lipstick that you need to learn the technique.

My recommendation is to:

  • Apply it to clean, dry lips.
  • Use the one-direction application technique.
  • Apply three layers.
  • Allow each layer to dry before applying the next.
  • Finish with the appropriate moisturizing gloss.
  • Give yourself a couple of weeks to learn the technique.
  • Pay attention to how your own lips respond.
  • Notice which foods affect your wear time.
  • Keep your gloss handy for moisture and maintenance.

Those steps are consistent with the manufacturer’s current application guidance. 

Is LipSense Worth It?

For me, the answer has been yes for more than 25 years.

But here’s the evidence I find most compelling:

I still have customers who started using LipSense with me in 2000.

Not because I told them it was going to last 18 hours.

Not because every single one of them gets identical wear.

They keep using it because it solves a problem.

They don’t want to constantly reapply their lip color.

And honestly, that’s still my favorite way to explain LipSense.

I sometimes ask a woman:

“Do you like reapplying your lipstick more than once a day?”

If the answer is no, then LipSense may be worth trying.

Final Thoughts: Try It for Yourself

After all these years, I’ve learned not to tell someone exactly how many hours they will get from LipSense.

For some people, that’s six hours.

For others, it’s eight.

And occasionally, people get much longer wear.
